Information in English

St. Mary’s Lutheran Church (Evangelisch-Lutherische St. Mariengemeinde) in Berlin-Zehlendorf belongs to the Independent Evangelical Lutheran Church (Selbständige Evangelisch-Lutherische Kirche), the sister church of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod in Germany. The congregation was founded in 1961; the first pastor of the congregation was Dr. Jobst Schöne; he served the congregation for almost 25 years, until he was elected bishop of the SELK in 1985. In Zehlendorf he was followed by pastor Günther Kuhlmann (1986-1991) and pastor Dr. Gottfried Martens (1991- now).

At the beginning the congregation worshipped in a small chapel. After the chapel had become too small for the growing number of worshippers, the congregation decided to build a new church which was consecrated in February 1973. This church building is certainly one of the most beautiful churches in our SELK. Every Sunday it is attended by many members of the congregation and also by many guests. During the last twelve years the congregation has grown from 220 to more than 800 members.

The center of the church life of St. Mary’s Lutheran Church is most certainly the worship service. Every Sunday people from all over Berlin come together in the church in order to receive Holy Absolution, to listen to the Word of God and to receive the Body and the Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Holy Sacrament of the Altar is celebrated in every worship service. The Sunday Services usually begin at 10 a.m.; but there are also masses during the week as well, commemorating the apostles and other saints.

Beneath the church building there is a retreat center (Freizeitheim) in the basement, where groups and single persons can stay over night, when they are in Berlin. Thus we can often welcome visitors from all over the world in our church. From our church you can easily get to the center of Berlin by S-Bahn (city-railway, metropolitan railway) and U-Bahn (underground, subway).

Since January 1, 2006 Trinity Lutheran Church (Evangelisch-Lutherische Dreieinigkeitsgemeinde) in Berlin-Steglitz has joined our church. Thus the worship services of our congregation now take place in two church buildings: Additionally to the services in our St. Mary's Church we have services in our Trinity Church on Saturday evening at 5 p.m. Once a month the service in Steglitz takes place on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. as well. Then there is no service in Steglitz on Saturday evening the day before.

St. Mary's Lutheran Church is situated in the very south west of Berlin. It can easily be reached from the railway station Berlin-Wannsee by bus 118 (bus stop Schützallee/Riemeisterstraße) or from the S-Bahn station Zehlendorf. Trinity Lutheran Church is situated close to the S-Bahn station Rathaus Steglitz.
